Getting Yer Groove On...

We saw the movie Hitch on Valentine's day and my husband got it in his head we need to dance. Now mind you, we are the epitome of white. I once had my roommate, Denise, try to teach me moves, it didn't help. In fact in the 11 years I did ballet, timing was my one issue...my teacher would always say, "Can't you hear the beat?" "Uhhh...it's classical music..." -then she'd count it out for me ...5...6...7...8. It's not that I can't hear it, I just have to try harder than others- and if someone is clapping off beat, I'll follow them every time. It is really sad. So, needless to say I'm quite self-conscious about my dancing which prohibits me from cutting loose in "da club" and what not. And what is cool or sexy about a big bellied, off kilter woman without a sense of rhythm trying to dance? Nothing I tell you. Nothing.

In an effort to convince me and a friend, who is also quite self-consious about her moves, that we should just forget what the naysayers think and give it our all, he brought in the experts. The other night he had my sister-in-law, Jessica, try to school us (as she is one of those dancers who makes it seem SO easy...but its not.)

I have a feeling that this is sort-of what we must have looked like:

Thanks Jenny for the link! It made me laugh!

You know what's sad? I watched that video and thought, "He's got some pretty good moves!"
I mean, in the dark, surrounded by lots of other people dancing, he wouldn't be too bad. At least he's ON BEAT. So what if some of his moves were a little silly?
I'm like you, Noelle... I can't find the beat. I'm probably the one clapping off-beat who throws you off!
I always blamed my lack of dancing skills on being raised in Christian school -- by the time I was exposed to music that you could dance to, those brain paths had closed down. I was just too old to develop the basic skills necessary to dance without looking like... Elaine.

Oh, I can so relate. I would love to be able to dance but I am rhythmically challenged as well. =)

If it's not Betsy throwing you off it would be me. Emily just laughs at me.

I'm like the line from U2's Vertigo

"They know that they can't dance
At least they know"

Rhythmically challenged does not even begin to cover my lack of skills. It's really really sad!

I'm glad you enjoyed the video!

Okay...If we seriously looked like this guy, we wouldn't have anything to worry about. He was good! Though I was bothered the whole video by the fact that he had been home so long and still had his jacket on. I guess I have bigger issues than the dancing one. :)

P.S. can you please get some different pictures of me?

It's all about dancing where you're good. Using your strengths... not your weaknesses. Give me some country music, and I can 2 step pretty good. Some big band swing, and I've got the moves, even a little fox trot and I'm pretty good at the waltz too, but if anyone is rapping to a drums-n-bass hook... forget it, I look like an idiot. Now, play some Bee Gees and look out Johnny T, I'm incredible. Shake my booty all over the floor. HA

That video made me smile. I think I got it goin' on when I'm by myself, too. Like Betsy, I didn't think he was bad. Like anonymous(we know who you are), I was wondering why he didn't take his jacket off, too! Didn't he get hot?! I saw Hitch also, very fun movie.
